Master of Science

This degree requires a total of 30 credits, 24 credits of coursework and a maximum of 6 credits of HOS 6971
(Masters Research). The student must complete a minimum of twelve credits of graduate coursework in his/her major.
HOS 6931 (Horticultural Science Seminar) and HOS6932 (Seminar Preparation) are also required.
The student and supervisory committee will determine courses necessary to best meet the student's professional objectives. Students may also select a minor in another area of interest consisting of at least 6 credits at the 5000 level or above. The Master of Science degree is granted following the satisfactory completion of all coursework, a thesis, and passing the final examination.
Master of Science, Non-Thesis
This degree requires a minimum 30 credits of course work, with at least
16 of these credits in Horticultural Science. There is no thesis requirement.
The essential elements of this program include course work and a comprehensive
written and final oral examination. The student and their supervisory
committee will determine courses necessary to best meet the student's
professional objectives. This degree option is typically not eligible
for funding and is considered a terminal degree.
Doctor of Philosophy
Doctoral study consists of independent mastery of a field of knowledge and the successful completion of original research. Doctoral programs are more flexible and varied than those leading to Master's degrees. Programs are set up with the help of the student ’s supervisory committee to achieve his or her career objectives. A minimum of 90 semester hours beyond the Bachelor's level is required for the doctoral degree. Up to 30 hours earned in an approved M.S. degree program may count toward this minimum. A Doctor of Philosophy degree is granted following the satisfactory completion of all coursework, an oral qualifying exam, a dissertation, and an oral dissertation defense.
