Degrees Offered

Master of Science
This degree requires a minimum of 30 credits, twelve of which must be formal coursework in Horticultural Sciences. The student and their supervisory committee will determine courses necessary to best meet the student's professional objectives. Students may also select a minor which consists of at least 6 credits of 5000 level or above courses in the area of interest. The Master of Science degree is granted following the satisfactory completion of all coursework, a thesis, and passing the final examination.

Doctor of Philosophy
Doctoral study consists of independent mastery of a field of knowledge and the successful completion of original research. Doctoral students act largely on their own initiative and thus, doctoral programs are more flexible and varied than those leading to Master's degrees. A minimum of 90 semester hours beyond the Bachelor's level is required for the doctoral degree. Up to 30 hours earned in an approved M.S. degree program may count toward this minimum. A Doctor of Philosophy degree is granted following the satisfactory completion of all coursework, an oral qualifying exam, a dissertation, and an oral dissertation defense.

Master of Science, Non-Thesis
This degree requires a minimum 30 credits of course work, with at least 16 of these credits in Horticultural Science. There is no thesis requirement. The essential elements of this program include course work and a comprehensive written and final oral examination. The student and their supervisory committee will determine courses necessary to best meet the student's professional objectives. This degree option is typically not eligible for funding and is considered a terminal degree.
