Cold and Frost Protection Methodology Research

The history of research in this area is rather voluminous as can be seen in the list of publications. Currently, a 3 acre grove [really an orchard since pain was taken to line the trees up in rows at equal distances] located in a highy visible location just South of the intersection of Museum and Hull Roads on the Main Campus of the University of Florida is equipped with an irrigation system that involves a number of treatments, i.e., configurations of nozzles under and within the trees {see map}

The irrigation system and many of the nozzles used were donated by Maxijet of Dundee. Ms. Susie Thayer, President of Maxijet, has both encouraging and innovative in her support of the project. Other nozzles were provided by Olsen. The nutrition of the block is maintained by Fertilizer donated by Diamond R and Mr. Tim Gaver¹s coordination in this effort is gratefully acknowledged.  Observations made following a freeze on Feb. 5, 1996 are published in the Proceedings of the
Florida State Horticultural Society 109:105-109 (1996).  A reprint may be requested by sending an email request to martsolf@ufl.edu with a brief explanation as to why you are interested.

There are some questions about how to work GOES images into a Cold Protection Module of DISC.  Members of the
Weather Advisory Committee are viewing these images and providing advise as to how they may be handled in FAWN
or perhaps in DISC.
